What does the scholarship get me?

Purpose of award
Sir Apirana Ngata Memorial Scholarships aim to promote higher education among Māori.
Selection criteria
This scholarships are open to all Māori but in line with the Māori Soldiers Trust Act 1957, where practicable preference will be given to descendants of Māori World War 1 veterans. "Māori World War 1 veterans means a 'Māori's who has served overseas during World War 1 as a member of any of the armed forces of the Crown.'
Students may study any field. Selection considers the following:
* Academic record
* Demonstrated strong interest in Māori culture and language
* Evidence of involvement in cultural and/or community activities.
What conditions are attached to acceptance of this award?
The successful candidates will be required to work hard at the agreed course of study, attend lectures, complete assignments by due date and sit required exams. It will be necessary to give Te Tumu Paeroa Office a copy of all examination results during the year. Unsatisfactory performance in any term may result in the scholarship instalments being withheld.

Applications will be accepted for this scholarships from 1 January until 1 May each year.

How and when do students learn of the decision?
The Scholarship will be paid in two instalments upon evidence of results, and completion of the required assignment.

History or background of award
Funding for the scholarship comes from Hereheretau Station which is near Wairoa and the major asset of the Māori Soldiers Trust which set up the fund. Te Tumu Paeroa is the organisation that supports the Māori Trustee to administer Hereheretau Station and the scholarships.
Additional information
The successful candidate will be required to complete an assignment for the Trust on a subject relevant to the Māori Soldiers Trust e.g. economics, business, farming, sciences, management, valuation, technology.
