What does the scholarship get me?
$5,000 (undergraduate), $10,000 (postgraduate)

Usually closes on 1 December.
Length of award
Undergraduate: Tenure is for up to three years while the scholar undertakes a Bachelors’ or Diploma programme at a New Zealand university or polytech (this may be extended depending on the programme of study).
Postgraduate: Tenure is for up to two years while the scholar undertakes a Masters’ or Doctoral programme at a New Zealand university or polytech (this may be extended depending on the research).
Number of awards offered
6 for undergraduate, 4 for postgraduate
Purpose of award
The industry needs highly skilled people – not just in food sciences and engineering, but in environmental science, international marketing, process design, industrial innovation – in fact, most subjects will be considered, as long as the person is adaptable, intelligent and hard working.
Selection criteria
Eligibility To be eligible to apply for this scholarship applicants must be a New Zealand citizen or permanent resident.
The selection criteria used by MIA in its assessment include, but are not limited to:
- academic achievements and potential.
- interest in a future career in the meat processing and export industry.
- the relevance of the area of study to the meat processing and export industry (see above).
- potential future contribution to the industry.

History or background of award
The New Zealand meat industry is one of New Zealand’s largest industries, exporting $8 billion worth of product annually and employing more than 24,000 people. In the past three decades the industry has transformed itself, developing new products, adopting new technologies and automating production, and selling to new overseas markets.
