Purpose of award

This scholarship recognises and supports high achievers entering their first year of a Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) (BE(Hons)) degree programme at the University of Canterbury.

Selection criteria

Applicants must have completed, or be completing, a university entrance qualification and must have studied at secondary level in New Zealand in the year of application (or, in the case of a gap year,1in the year immediately prior). International students who meet these requirements are eligible to apply.

What conditions are attached to acceptance of this award?

The scholarship must be taken up in the year following the year of application.

Recipients must qualify for admission to the University, through achievement of University Entrance or an equivalent qualification, by at least one week before the first day of Semester 1 of the first year of tenure.

Regulations

How and when do students learn of the decision?

In making its recommendation, the committee will consider:a. academic achievement, as indicated by quality of achievement at NCEA Levels 2 and 3, or in equivalent university entrance qualifications; andb. demonstrated commitment to, or interest in, the BE(Hons) degree programme.

If, in any year, there are fewer candidates of sufficient merit than there are scholarships available, fewer awards will be made.

Unless otherwise specified in the offer letter, an offer of a scholarship will lapse if it is not formally accepted within one calendar month of the date of the offer.
The scholarship will be paid by direct credit to a recipient’s nominated New Zealand bank account as soon as practicableafter the final date, in his or her first and third semesters of study, on which a student may receive a full refund for withdrawal from a course,3 and after confirmation of the student’s full-time enrolment in a BE(Hons) degree programme.

Decision makers

The scholarship is awarded by the Council of the University on the recommendation of a selection committee comprising:a. the Pro-Vice-Chancellor, Engineering (or nominee); b. the Dean of Engineering (or nominee); andc. the Senior Academic Advisor, Engineering (or nominee).
