History or background of award
This award is made from a trust fund set up by David W Steele, a farmer and MAF farm adviser and then a tutor at Waikato Polytechnic from 1985 to 1996. He always had the good of his students at heart, keen to help struggling persons on the first steps to further education or knowledge. The award is in memory of one of his students, Janine Young, who epitomised his ideals. She had a young family and worked very hard to gain further knowledge but died of cancer before the completion of her polytechnic course.
