History or background of award
The Kiley Family Memorial Trust was established in 2000 by brothers, Peter and John Kiley and is adminstered by The Public Trust. Revenue from the Kiley Family Trust owned Farms in Taranaki which are managed by Public Trust fund the Scholarship Awards.
Peter and John's grandfather, Jim Kiley, emigrated from Australia just over 100 years ago at the age of 17. After working in the Taranaki area he purchased land for farming from the local Māori. The two Taranaki dairy farms have played an important part in the life of the Kiley family. From a faith point of view the farms enabled Jim's sone Len to receive a Catholic education at St Patrick's and it gave educational and economic stability to his grandsons, Peter and John.
Having enjoyed these financial advantages, Peter and John wished to help young people who are facing financial challenges in their education.
