History or background of award
The Provinces of Manawatu/Rangitikei and Wanganui have establish a Trust to be known as
'THE DON SCOTT AGRICULTURAL EDUCATION TRUST'
This is the result of merging two Agricultural Training Trusts, that previously operated within the combined Provinces Region.
The Trust gains its name from Don Scott who was the Field Officer for the Combined Provinces from 1967 to 1973.
The original Memorial Scholarship was established in 1974 in memory of Don who was well respected in farming circles, not only in Manawatu, Rangitikei and Wanganui but indeed throughout the whole country.
His outstanding service to the rural community as a Federated Farmers organiser, Field Officer for the then Cadet Scheme, and in many other organisations such as A & P Associations, endeared him to a wide circle of friends. He found the most satisfaction in helping the hundreds of young men and women with whom he came in contact through the Cadet Scheme. Nothing was too much trouble to ensure they were placed on farms that suited each individual. He was always available to cadets, parents and farmers when problems arose. Indicative of how he was respected was that the initial fund was contributed to by five hundred farmers.
In more recent years (1992) the Provinces established another Trust known as Manawatu/Rangitikei Federated Farmers Agricultural Training Trust. This being created after Federated Farmers Cadet Scheme ceased to exist. A new organisation was formed known as 'Farm Education Training Association (FETA).
Today FETA is called 'The Primary Industry Training Organisation, (Primary ITO) which assists people into farming for the Agriculture Sector.
With both Trusts having similar objectives, it became expedient to combine the two Trusts so as to provide a more worthwhile sum for distribution.
The Trustees are seeking to increase the capital base through donations and bequests, and have already added to the capital base with a generous donation of $22,000 from the Levin Branch of Federated Farmers who recently closed their branch with representation now being driven on a Provincial/Regional basis.
