Purpose of award

Scholarships are provided to help the Waitemata DHB workforce better reflect the population that we serve. Māori and Pacific health practitioners are currently under-represented in our workforce, and as such, scholarships are only available to residents from Māori and/or Pacific ethnic backgrounds. Supported courses change annually in response to workforce requirements.

Selection criteria

The main eligibility criteria for scholarship applications are:

New Zealand citizenship and/or permanent residency
Māori and/or Pacific ethnicity
Demonstrated academic achievement
Financial need
Community involvement
A commitment to working in the Waitemata region

Please note: If you are accessing funding from other scholarship programmes, you will need to declare this.

What conditions are attached to acceptance of this award?

Successful applicants will be required to:
enter into an agreement with WDHB which bonds them to employment with WDHB (or a health provider in the Waitemata region) for 2 years upon graduation. Specific details of the bonding agreement are available upon request.
have a brief profile and photo on the WDHB Scholarship website
submit reports updating progress at the end of each semester
attend a minimum of 2 informal meetings within the academic year
maintain at least a C+ average to maintain their scholarship. Recipients who fail exams or fall below a C+ average in any semester will be put on scholarship probation. Exceptional circumstances will be considered
inform the Scholarship Programme of the criteria for any other scholarships or grants that they accept at anytime during the course of receiving the WDHB scholarship
undertake clinical placement or observation opportunities and networking opportunities within WDHB provided services where appropriate. Please check the requirements for your course of study

How do students apply?

To apply for the scholarship you will need to create a login on our Recruitment Centre website. Once you have done this you can then search for the role using this job reference number - NOR06567
Please allow about 20 minutes to complete the online screening questions and some additional time to upload your CV and Cover Letter.
Once you have started your application you can save it and return to complete it at any time before the closing date.

How and when do students learn of the decision?

All applicants will receive an email on receipt of application. All applicants will be notified of the outcome of the shortlisting process by email.

Decision makers

Completed applications will be considered by a panel of representatives selected from the health industry, the community, the Māori and Pacific Island groups.

History or background of award

The Health Scholarship Programme supports Māori and Pacific residents of the Waitemata region (North Shore City, Waitakere City and Rodney District) to undertake health-specific tertiary study with an accredited New Zealand education provider.

As well as providing you with financial support to achieve your goals, we'll also provide that all-important link to our DHB so you can access practical placement opportunities and get help to begin a rewarding career after completing your study.

All areas of health study at undergraduate level will be considered. Examples are:
