Purpose of award
The main purpose of the Scholarship is to assist final year medical students undertaking an elective that focuses on Pacific Island health.
The Scholarship will be open to students of The University of Auckland enrolled and who have paid the fees, or arranged to pay the fees, for studying Part V of the programme for the degree of Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery. The Scholarship will be available for electives undertaken in a Pacific Island or in New Zealand when the field of study is Pacific Island Health.
The basis of selection will be academic merit, the nature of the study proposed and the likely contribution to medical progress that will result.
What conditions are attached to acceptance of this award?
The University of Auckland has power to amend or vary these Regulations (in consultation with the Donor during his or her lifetime) provided that there is no departure from the main purpose of the Scholarship.
The successful candidate is required to prepare a report for the sponsor on return from his or her elective posting.

The emolument may be disbursed in one sum or by instalments.
The Scholarship will be awarded by the University of Auckland Council upon the recommendation of the Dean of the Faculty of Medical and Health Sciences.
History or background of award
This Scholarship was established in 2001 and is financed by the Dr Newton Wickham CBE Award for Pacific Island Health.
The frequency of the award and the amount of financial support given to a single recipient will be at the discretion of The University of Auckland Charitable Trust.
The University of Auckland Council is not obliged to make an award if in any year there is no candidate of sufficient merit.
