Purpose of award

1. The Scholarship is intended to support a well-rounded student who has what it takes to excel in the wider world. The successful applicant each year will be selected having regard not only for excellence in accountancy and other academic achievements, but also having regard to special social and humane attributes and values. The successful candidate will demonstrate good communication skills; confidence and personality; leadership and their contribution to the wider community.

Selection criteria

The Scholarship is offered to students majoring in accountancy and embarking on their third year of study towards a BCA at Victoria University of Wellington
* The applicant must not be a previous winner of the Scholarship.
* The applicant must be a New Zealand citizen or a permanent resident.
* The Scholarship recipient may receive this and other awards simultaneously.

What conditions are attached to acceptance of this award?

The presentation of this scholarship does not imply a promise of future employment with BDO.

How do students apply?

A completed online application must be submitted by 4:30pm on the closing date. Late or incomplete applications will not be accepted. Any required supporting documentation (including references) must also be received by 4:30pm on the closing date in order for the application to be considered.

How and when do students learn of the decision?

As soon as feasible after the closing date depending on the availability of the panel.
The Scholarship will be awarded based on the recommendation of the Selection Committee.

Decision makers

Applicants will be shortlisted, and may be required to attend a brief interview with the Selection Committee comprising a Partner, a Manager, and a recent university Graduate from BDO.

History or background of award

BDO (Wellington) Limited established the BDO Scholarship in Accountancy in 2008. Sarah Carter was a graduate accountant working for BDO in Wellington when she tragically died whilst on holiday in Thailand in 2011. BDO (Wellington) renamed this scholarship in her memory. The value of the Scholarship is currently $2,000, to be paid in two instalments of $1,000 in April and August of the year it is awarded. There may also be the possibility of an internship for a suitable candidate
