Purpose of award

• A legacy for Jonathan Nicholls, the former Head of Actuarial Services at ACC and who was passionately committed to growing and developing the actuarial profession.
• Promote, develop and grow students wishing to pursue a career as an Actuary.
• Investing in local talent to provide a graduate in mathematics, statistics, economics, finance or specifically actuarial Science with financial support to complete their studies at Victoria University.

Selection criteria

• Current students (undergraduate or postgraduate) at Victoria University of Wellington
• Academic Achievement.
• Communication skills: Ability to explain complex ideas clearly both verbally and in writing.
• Motivation to Achieve: is committed to achieving agreed objectives and working in the actuarial profession and meeting the needs of our business customers.
• Team Work: Demonstrated contribution to a positive and supportive team environment
• Some knowledge of ACC scheme benefits and business environment.

What conditions are attached to acceptance of this award?

The scholarship is administered by the Scholarships Office, on behalf of the Victoria University Foundation. The Victoria University Foundation will expect recipients to write a letter of thanks to the donor’s family on receipt of the award and an end of year progress report to ACC.

How do students apply?

A completed online application must be submitted by 4:30pm on the closing date. Late or incomplete applications will not be accepted. Any required supporting documentation (including references) must also be received by 4:30pm on the closing date in order for the application to be considered.

How and when do students learn of the decision?

Internship: Via the ACC Head of Actuarial Services and the nominated Recruitment Consultant determined by ACC.

Decision makers

ACC: Chief Actuary, Head of Actuarial Services, VUW: Heads of Schools of Mathematics and Statistics and of Economics and Finance. Decisions made by the decision makers is full and final.

History or background of award

ACC is dedicated to supporting those wishing to study Actuarial Science and looking to pursue a career in the actuarial profession. In Honour of Jonathan Nicholls (ACC’s Head of Actuarial Services team who passed away in early 2015) ACC wishes to promote the actuarial profession in much the same way that Jonathan did.

• ACC has one of the largest actuarial teams in NZ
• The team plays a key role in helping ACC by:

o Monitoring past performance and future trends to enable us to set levies for all current and future claimants.
o Providing reports and information to management and the board on future business requirements. This includes business areas such as finance, claims management and injury prevention.

Additional information

The successful candidate may also be offered an internship at ACC over the summer break, subject to business requirements.

Potential Internship:
• Allow recipients the opportunity to gain paid work experience in the actuarial team at an organisation that prides itself on customer service and delivery, along with high professional standards, under the mentorship of ACC’s Head of Actuarial Services.
