What does the scholarship get me?

$2500 - This scholarship can be used for tuition fees and/or accommodation

Length of award

One year.
The scholarship will be awarded in two (2) instalments. The first payment will be made in Trimester 1. The second payment, in Trimester 2, will be based on the recipients results from Trimester 1.

Number of awards offered


Purpose of award

The scholarship is to support a Ngāti Tūwharetoa undergraduate student at Victoria University studying in any of the seven categories listed below which support the Pou of the strategy. They are:
1. Environmental
Pou Tahi is Kaitiaki o Ngā Taonga Tuku Iho. This pou encourages the active protection of our natural environment inclusive of mātauranga Māori. 

2. Te Reo Māori me ona Tikanga
Pou Rua is Ko Tūwharetoa te Iwi. This pou supports the maintenance and practice of Tūwharetoa kawa, tikanga, and reo.

3. Education
Pou Toru is Whai Hua. This pou focuses on educational and vocational achievement.

4. Health & Wellbeing
Pou Wha is Te Mauri o te Oranga. This pou encourages healthy active lifestyles and a holistic approach to wellbeing.

5. Technology & Innovation
Pou Rima is Tūwharetoa ki te Kāinga, Tūwharetoa ki te Ao. This pou recognises that we are living in a time where the adoption of new technology, innovation and new media is critical to remaining relevant and connected.

6. Commerce
Pou Ono is Whai Rawa. This pou focuses on fiduciary responsibility, achieving positive financial returns, and building long-term revenue streams to support the delivery of our Ngā Ara Matua Strategy.

7. Business and Law
Pou Whitu is Ara Whanake. This pou recognises that a sound approach to business management supports the achievement of our Ngā Ara Mātua Strategy.

Selection criteria

Each applicant will need to
• Be studying full-time at Victoria University of Wellington for a undergraduate qualification;
• Be registered with the Tūwharetoa Māori Trust Board.

What conditions are attached to acceptance of this award?

Currently in approved programme of study at Victoria University.

How do students apply?

A completed online application must be submitted by 4:30pm on the closing date. Late or incomplete applications will not be accepted. Any required supporting documentation (including references) must also be received by 4:30pm on the closing date in order for the application to be considered.

Scholarship specific documentation
  - Provide a supporting letter from their marae/hapū
  - Provide a personal statement on how their study aligns with the chosen category, describe their current involvement with Ngāti Tūwharetoa marae, hapū and iwi; describe how their qualification will enable them to contribute to Ngāti Tūwharetoa marae, hapū and iwi.

Decision makers

The Tūwharetoa Māori Trust Board will select the successful applicant.

History or background of award

This scholarship is co-funded with Victoria University of Wellington to support Tūwharetoa Māori Trust Board’s Ngā Ara Matua Strategy 2016- 2020 and Ngāti Tūwharetoa participation and success at Victoria.

Additional information

Each applicant will need to
•    Provide information on current study;
•    Provide a copy of their academic results for the previous year including overall GPA score.
•    Provide history of previous qualifications achieved;
•    Provide a supporting letter from their marae/hapū;
•    Provide a brief on how their study aligns with the chosen category;
•    Describe their current involvement with Ngāti Tūwharetoa marae, hapū and iwi; and
•    Describe how their qualification will enable them to contribute to Ngāti Tūwharetoa marae, hapū and iwi.
