Purpose of award

This scholarship recognises and supports high-achieving 200-, 300-, and 400-level students majoring in Mathematics, Statistics, Computational and Applied Mathematical Sciences, Data Science, Applied Data Science or Financial Engineering at the University of Canterbury.

Selection criteria

At 31 March in the year of application, applicants must be enrolled full-time at the University in at least 60 points of 200-, 300-, or 400-level taught courses (not including any thesis course) for an undergraduate or postgraduate programme in:
a. Mathematics;
b. Statistics;
c. Computational and Applied Mathematical Sciences;
d. Data Science;
e. Applied Data Science; or
f. Financial Engineering.

What conditions are attached to acceptance of this award?

By accepting the award, recipients permit publication and announcement of their acceptance, and indicate that they are willing to engage in University community activities, such as student mentoring, acting as University ambassadors, and being involved with University publicity as appropriate.

Decision makers

The scholarship is awarded by the Council of the University on the recommendation of a selection committee comprising:
a. the Pro-Vice-Chancellor of Engineering and Forestry (or nominee);
b. the Head of the School of Mathematics and Statistics (or nominee); and
c. the Senior Student Advisor, College of Engineering (or nominee).

History or background of award

The University of Canterbury Department of Mathematics and Statistics established the scholarship in 2013.
