Purpose of award
The Scholarships shall be open to applicants intending to further their studies with a major in English.
Selection criteria
Candidates must be enrolled in one or more English courses in each semester of study to take up and be paid the Scholarship.
What conditions are attached to acceptance of this award?
The basis of selection will be academic merit, with a particular focus on previous study in English. Financial and personal circumstances may also be considered.
How do students apply?
Scholarship applications will usually open around six weeks before the closing date. Please read the regulations carefully to be sure you are eligible before you apply.

How and when do students learn of the decision?
The Scholarships will be paid in one lump sum in Week 3 of the first semester of eligible enrolment.
Decision makers
The Scholarships will be awarded by the University of Auckland Council on the recommendation of a selection committee comprising the Dean of the Faculty of Arts (or nominee), the Head of Applied Language Studies and Linguistics (or nominee) and the Head of English (or nominee) in the Faculty
of Arts.
History or background of award
These Scholarships are provided from a fund bequeathed in 1971 under the will of the late Miss Lucy Phillips, to assist students of English to further studies in the subject.
Additional information
To take up and be paid the Scholarship the candidate must be enrolled and have paid the fees, or arranged to pay the fees, for full-time postgraduate or undergraduate study in the Faculty of Arts majoring in English.
