Purpose of award

To support students from Auckland and Wellington in their first year of study at the University of Canterbury.

Selection criteria

Applicants must be Year-13 students or on a gap year, and, in the year of application (or, in the case of gap year applicants, in the previous year), either attending an Auckland or Wellington school or living in the Auckland or Wellington region. They must have gained NCEA Level 2 with Merit or Excellence endorsement (or equivalent).

What conditions are attached to acceptance of this award?

The scholarship must be taken up in the year following the year of application.
In the year of tenure, recipients must be enrolled at the University full-time for the full academic year.
In the event of a recipient’s withdrawal from full-time, full-year enrolment at the University, or from residence at University Hall, the scholarship is withdrawn and any paid funds may be recovered.
By accepting the award, recipients permit publication and announcement of their acceptance, and indicate that they intend to engage in the opportunities offered by the scholarship and that they are willing to engage in University community activities, such as student mentoring, acting as University ambassadors, and being involved with University publicity as appropriate.
Continuation of a scholarship is conditional on satisfactory academic progress and adherence to the University’s statutes and regulations.

The scholarship is awarded by the Council of the University on the recommendation of a selection committee comprising:
a. the Executive Director, Student Services and Communication (or nominee); and
b. the Director, Student Success (or nominee).

This scholarship was established by the University of Canterbury and Campus Living Villages NZ

Additional information

The scholarship provides the following:

- Assistance with fees for fully catered accommodation at Campus Living Villages NZ's University Hall, to a value of $5,000, and priority consideration for a place at University Hall.
- Opportunities to attend, at no cost, educational outdoor recreational field trips organised by the University in the Canterbury region.
- Opportunities to attend, at no cost, a range of workshops and seminars organised by the University for personal, academic, and professional development.
- Opportunities to experience and contribute to the Christchurch regeneration, and to engage with the Christchurch community through membership of the Student Volunteer Army and through small-group projects.
