Purpose of award

The main purpose of the Scholarship is to assist students who are the first member of their immediate family to attend university and who, because of financial hardship, may not otherwise be able to undertake a university degree.

Selection criteria

The basis of selection will be academic merit, motivation to succeed at University and demonstrated financial hardship. The recipient must be the first member of his or her family to attend a university.


What conditions are attached to acceptance of this award?

To continue to hold the Scholarship the Scholar must maintain a grade point average of at least 4.00 (equivalent to a B- average) in each year of study

For the purposes of this Scholarship a recipient's grade point average (GPA) is based on all the courses they undertake in each year of study. A GPA of 4.00 is equivalent to a B- average.


How do students apply?

Please note, Scholarships usually open for application approximately 6 weeks before the closing date.

How and when do students learn of the decision?

Approximately six weeks after the closing date by letter or email.

Decision makers

The Scholarship will be awarded by The University of Auckland Council upon the recommendation of a Selection Committee comprising the Chair of the Scholarships Sub-Committee (or nominee), a representative of the Alumni Relations and Development Department and the Donor (or nominee).

History or background of award

The Scholarship was established in 2013 and is funded by Quentin Hills, Managing Director of MMC Securities Corp.

Additional information

The scholarship will be awarded to a recipient who is the first member of their family, including siblings and parents, to enrol at a university. Adoptive and step siblings and parents are included where they have lived with the applicant for five or more years.

The Scholarship will cover up to four years of study towards the completion of a first undergraduate degree including a conjoint degree.

A recipient who has completed a three year undergraduate degree and enrolled into postgraduate study may re-apply for a fourth and final year of funding.
