Purpose of award
This scholarship recognises the value of Maori students in the University of Canterbury College of Education, Health and Human Development and aims to support those who are entering tertiary study for the first time.
Selection criteria
Applicants must be of Maori heritage. They must be New Zealand citizens or holders of New Zealand residence class visas, who are studying at secondary level in New Zealand in the year of application (or, in the case of a gap year, in the year immediately prior to the year of application). Applicants must not have participated in a programme at any tertiary education institution in any year prior to the year of tenure.
Recipients must be enrolled, in the year of tenure, full-time in both Semester 1 and Semester 2 of an undergraduate degree programme in the College of Education, Health and Human Development.
What conditions are attached to acceptance of this award?
By accepting the award, recipients permit publication and announcement of their acceptance, and indicate that they are willing to engage in University community activities, such as student mentoring, acting as University ambassadors, and being involved with University publicity as appropriate.

Decision makers
The scholarship is awarded by the Council of the University on the recommendation of a selection committee comprising at least three of the following:
a. the Dean of Education and Health Sciences (or nominee);
b. the Academic Manager of the College of Education, Health and Human Development (or nominee);
c. the Kaiārahi Māori of the College of Education, Health and Human Development (or nominee); and
d. a member of the College’s Māori Success Group nominated by the Dean of Education and Health Sciences.
History or background of award
The scholarship was established in 2015 by the College of Education, Health and Human Development. It partly replaces the College of Education Māori and Pasifika Scholarships.
