Purpose of award

To enable a student of proven or potential musical excellence as a performer to study Music at a New Zealand University or enrol at the Royal College of Music, London.

Selection criteria

Applicants must be:
* a current or former pupil of Iona College
* already enrolled or undertaking to enrol as a student with the Royal College of Music, London or a Music Department, School or Faculty of a New Zealand University

The applicant must have:
* Proven or potential excellence as a musical performer
* Generosity of spirit toward others

What conditions are attached to acceptance of this award?

The successful applicant (scholar) must:
*use the Scholarship only for the purpose authorised by the Selection Committee
*at the end of each year, provide the Selection Committee with a brief written statement reporting on her progress and attainment.
*notify the Selection Committee immediately should her circumstances alter or the course of study cease
*reapply annually for continuation of funding which will be at the discretion of the Selection Committee following their consideration of the scholar's report, progress and attainment.

How do students apply?

Applicants are required to submit:
*a written application on the forms provided by Iona College
*an audition DVD, and
*two references written specifically in support of the application.

Applicants are short listed and will be expected to participate in an interview and if practical, perform before the Selection Committee.

How and when do students learn of the decision?

All applicants will receive written notification of the Selection Committee's final decision.

History or background of award

This scholarship has been set up to honour the memory of Margaret Leah Woodhouse (nee Thorp), an old girl of Iona College from 1927 to 1930, who loved music. She was awarded a scholarship by and continued tertiary studies at the Royal College of Music in London.

Additional information

One scholarship shall be awarded with such frequency and at such an annual value and for such annual periods of time to suit the needs of a suitable candidate. The monetary value of the scholarship will be in the vicinity of $10,000 per year.
