The scholarships cover course and compulsory fees and will be paid over a period of three years to the successful first year undergraduate or postgraduate recipients

Purpose of award

The purpose of the scholarships is to encourage Pacific students pursue studies in STEM subjects at tertiary level and increase the numbers employed in STEM careers.


Selection criteria

To be eligible for a Toloa Tertiary Scholarship, applicants must:

Be of Pacific Island descent
Be a citizen or permanent resident of New Zealand
Have achieved NCEA Level 3 with Excellence or Merit passes in STEM subjects relevant to the proposed degree course
Have enrolled, or intend to enrol, in a full time undergraduate or postgraduate degree course, majoring in STEM subjects, at an approved NZQA accredited tertiary provider in New Zealand for the 2018 academic year.


What conditions are attached to acceptance of this award?

After checking that the application meets the eligibility guidelines, the application will be considered against the three key criteria: cultural participation in Pacific contexts  leadership potential level of preparedness for tertiary study by considering their performance to date in subjects relevant to their intended course.
Check that the application clearly outlines your Pasifika contribution and experience in the three key criteria above.

History or background of award

The Toloa Scholarships were established in 2015 and funded by the Ministry for Pacific Peoples.
These scholarships are designed to motivate, celebrate and inspire Pacific people to study STEM courses and enter a career in STEM. 

Additional information

Recipients will  also receive some mentoring during the course of their studies.
