Purpose of award

The purpose of the New Zealand Regional Development Scholarships (NZRDS) is for Pacific island candidates to gain knowledge and skills in specific subject areas that will assist in the development of their home country. Awardees are required to return to their home country for at least two years after the completion of their scholarship to apply these new skills and knowledge in government, civil society or private business organisations.

Countries eligible for New Zealand Regional Development Scholarships:
Cook Islands, Kiribati, Niue, Samoa, Solomon Islands Tonga, Tuvalu, Vanuatu.

Selection criteria

The scholarships are available for full-time, multi-year study. Study is offered at undergraduate level (eg Certificate, Diploma or Bachelors degree) and/or postgraduate level (eg Postgraduate Diploma or Masters degree), depending on the home country's human resource development needs.

What conditions are attached to acceptance of this award?

All applicants who are offered a New Zealand Regional Development Scholarship will be required to sign a contract with the New Zealand Government declaring they will comply with the terms and conditions of the scholarship.

Awardees are required to return to their home country for at least two years after the completion of their scholarship to apply these new skills and knowledge in government, civil society, or private business organisations.

How do students apply?

Most applications should be completed online and this is the only option for some countries. Paper applications are accepted for some countries only. Scholarships for both undergraduate and postgraduate study at a Pacific based tertiary institution, available to candidates from specific countries in the Pacific region.
