Pay
Pay for bus drivers varies, but they usually earn between $14 and $17 an hour (or between $29,120 and $35,360 a year, based on a 40-hour week), depending on experience, the region they work in and the company they work for.
City bus drivers can earn up to $48,000 or more by working overtime.
School bus drivers, who work up to four hours a day, 40 weeks a year, may earn about $12,000. Many school bus operators offer charters for school sports teams or community groups, which can add to a driver's pay.
Some companies also pay their drivers non-taxable extras such as meal allowances, or meet the costs of getting and renewing a driver's licence.
Career Progression
Bus drivers may be promoted to work as:
- supervisors
- managers
- bus inspectors
- bus driving instructors.
Some may go on to become self-employed.
