Entry requirements

It is recommended that candidates have achieved the National Certificate in Educational Achievement (NCEA) (Level 2) [Ref: 0973] in Mathematics, English, and Physics or General Science, or equivalent.

Candidates intending to undertake study towards the Explosion-Protected Electrical Equipment Installation optional strand of this qualification should hold an appropriate current practising licence as issued by the Electrical Workers Registration Board.

Candidates intending to undertake study towards the Explosion-Protected Electrical Equipment Inspection optional strand of this qualification should have completed the Explosion-Protected Electrical Equipment Installation optional strand of this qualification and hold a current electrical inspector practising licence as issued by the Electrical Workers Registration Board.

Candidates intending to undertake study towards the Explosion-Protected Electrical Equipment in Underground Mines optional strand of this qualification should have completed the Explosion-Protected Electrical Equipment Inspection optional strands of this qualification and hold an appropriate current practising licence as issued by the Electrical Workers Registration Board.

Unless registered with a current practicing licence or with a Trainee Limited Certificate, graduates of this qualification cannot carry out prescribed electrical work.

The qualification aligns with the requirements of AS/NZS 4761:2017 Competencies for working with electrical equipment in hazardous areas (EEHA).

This qualification does not cover knowledge and skills required to classify hazardous areas or design electrical equipment for explosive atmospheres.

The purpose of this qualification is to provide the electrotechnology industry with competent practitioners who are able to work safely and autonomously with explosion-protected equipment in explosive atmospheres.

This qualification is suitable for people who intend be working with explosion-protected electrical equipment in explosive atmospheres.

The optional strands provide additional outcomes specific to electrical equipment.
