Entry requirements

The programme aims to address the shortage by supporting teachers with specialist skills to progress from a Limited Authority to Teach (LAT) status to provisional registration to increase the pool of qualified teaching professionals. Graduates will contribute to the ongoing revitalisation of te reo me ōna tikanga and the maintenance and prosperity of whānau, hapū and iwi and their marae. They will demonstrate the values inherent in Ngā Kaupapa Tuku Iho and reflect the qualities and responsibilities defined by the Code of Professional Responsibility and Standards for the Teaching Profession.
NZQA and Teaching Council have agreed on arrangements for the joint approval and accreditation of ITE degree applications whose graduates are eligible to register with the Teaching Council. This application has been processed in conformity with these arrangements, and on 30 November 2022 the Teaching Council approved this application.

Its strategic purpose is to produce employable graduates with requisite teaching competencies to fulfil teaching roles and functions specifically in the wharekura context. To increase the number of culturally fit practitioners in the teaching profession to address the shortage of teacher supply in the wharekura (secondary school) sector.
