What can I expect out of this qualification?
Graduates will develop advanced knowledge and skills in an area of specialist practice to work effectively and collaboratively within a social services, education, health or Maori development area. Graduates will develop a critical awareness of their practice and the social context in which it exits. Graduates will be able to specialise in one of the five endorsement areas available for study in the programme. Specialist areas include Te Reo Maori Development, Adult Education, Social Work, Counselling and Maori Counselling. In addition graduates who complete the specified modules within the programme could exit with the award of the Diploma in Te Reo Rangatira or the Diploma in Adult Education or the Diploma in Social Work (incorporating National Diploma in Social Work) or the Diploma in Counselling (incorporating the National Diploma in Counselling) or the Diploma in Te Whiuwhiu o te Hau (Maori Counselling) (incorporating the National Diploma in Counselling). An early childhood education pathway is also available within this degree for Diploma in Teaching (Early Childhood Education) graduates.

Entry Requirements
Minimum requirements
1.1. Candidates are required to have: a minimum of 60 credits at NCEA Level 2 across four subjects (including English), or equivalent or 42 credits at NCEA Level 3 across 3 subjects, or equivalent or NCEA University Entrance, or equivalent. 1.2. Alternatively, candidates for the streams leading to specific endorsements of the Bachelor of Applied Social Science may be granted entry on the basis of relevant previous qualifications. Consult the additional programme regulations specific to the degree endorsements. 1.3. Candidates who do not meet these entry requirements may nevertheless be considered for provisional entry (if aged under 20) or special admission (if aged 20 or over). In such cases entry will be dependent on whether candidates demonstrate a reasonable likelihood of success in the programme. 1.4. Candidates whose first language is not English or Mâori, or who did not undertake their secondary schooling in English, will be required to demonstrate English language competency by having gained an overall International English Language Test Score (IELTS) of 6.5 in all academic bands. 1.5. Candidates are required to indicate whether they have been convicted of, or are being prosecuted for, a criminal offence. Prior to commencing the programme all successful candidates will be required to complete a police vetting form. Some types of criminal conviction may limit the ability to secure practicum placements and therefore complete the programme.
